Tom Morello has opened up about the upcoming album from Prophets Of Rage, noting that it will define who the band are in 2019 and beyond.

Back in 2016, Prophets Of Rage – a supergroup comprising of members of Rage Against The Machine, Cypress Hill, and Public Enemy – unleashed their debut EP, When The Party’s Over. Following it up with their self-titled album the following year, fans have been eagerly waiting for new music ever since.

While the band noted in 2018 that they had finished their new record, fans finally received a taster of fresh music back in June, when the group returned with ‘Made With Hate’.

Now, it seems as though we’re getting closer to new music, with Tom Morello recently speaking to Mary Anne Hobbs of BBC Radio 6 Music (via Blabbermouth) about their upcoming record, and what an album truly means in 2019.

“We talk among ourselves: ‘What does an album mean?'” Morello asked. “There used to be one way to do it — you would write an album, you’d record an album, you’d do six months of promotion and then the record would X, Y and Z.

“In this day and age, the process has become democratised in a way. The healthy side of that, I think, is that there’s more music available all the time, and there are no barriers. Music is cheaper than water now, so there’s no barriers to accessing the music.

“However, it’s such a white noise background of so much all the time that finding the crystal and gems within it is a more difficult process than perhaps it once was.”

On the topic of new music, Tom Morello explained that the band are hoping to release new music as soon as this week, with their upcoming album set to feature some more tunes that discuss current and pressing global issues.

“In light of the recent gun violence, we’ve got a very timely song that we’re gonna put out hopefully in the next couple of days,” Morello explained. ”

“Then beyond that, I think for Prophets Of Rage, this will be our third studio record and really the one where I think we have to define who we are in 2019 and beyond, rather than just sort of a coming together of groups with notable catalogs, to really find our own sound and to continue to grow.

“When the band came together in 2016, it was a reaction to the chaotic US election cycle. And we had to do more than tweet about it.

“And we had a lot of great arrows in our quiver when it comes to songs, and so by putting this group together, it was a way to move the goalpost and address the issues of the time to between 2,000 and 60,000 people a day. And now it’s time to really get that musical message on tape.”

Prophets Of Rage made their Australian debut back in 2018 when they appeared as part of the inaugural Download Festival lineup. Here’s hoping their next record comes alongside a return visit to the country.
