Torben Ulrich has unveiled his latest record, Oakland moments: cello, voice, reuniting (rejoicing), at the ripe young age of 92.

Torben Ulrich has been somewhat a mythical legend in the metal scene since his scene-stealing appearance in Some Kind Of Monster. In which he infamously commanded his son, Lars Ulrich, to “delete that” on a potential St Anger track.

For decades, Torben has worked a sa performer, writer, composer and choreographer — releasing music under a myriad of monikers. The latest record Oakland moments: cello, voice, reuniting (rejoicing) is a collaboration with American cellist Lori Goldston. The spoken-word and cello indebted record has been described as an exploration of “his rice-paper paintings” and “elements of athleticism, philosophy and mysticism.”

The musical relationship between Torben and Goldsten spans back to 2005, where the pair cut their teeth together in the band Instead Of, with fellow musicians Jaison Scott and Angelina Baldoz.

Lars Ulrich took to Instagram to celebrate the achievement of his father,

“This is my dad… he’s the one on the left. 92-years-old and just getting started…” he wrote.

“Today, as one does at his age, he’s putting out another record… This one being a collaboration with his dear friend @legoldston. If anybody’s interested in checking it out, it’s available on the @obscure_terrible Bandcamp page. Definitely something to aspire to.” Ulrich ended the post with the most excellent hashtag #HeavyMetalGandalf.
