Describing Beat Connection’s sound is difficult, part indie pop, part world music rhythms part electro, they’re an amalgamation of wide ranging sonic loves and experiences coming together at the intersection of all their individual influences.
Comprised of the Seattle-based Reed Juenger, Jarred Katz, Tom Eddy, and Mark Hunter, Beat Connection has evolved from its origin as a duo to the current and complete status as quartet. And as its compositional evolution has emerged, so too has the group’s mentality, relying on a laser focus and sharp eye for detail to help shape its big-picture worldview.
The band have just released their brand new LP titled Product 3 (out now via Anti-) and to celebrate the guys have kindly given us a track by track run down of this impressive effort. Check it out below and if you like what you’re hearing pop by www.beatconnection.co.
Hesitation
This song is about us getting back in stride, getting back on our feet really. This whole record started during a period in all of our lives where we were pretty unsure about where to head next, what to do. Its a bit of a slight to start a record off with an aura of hesitancy, but this song is more about the converse of that: deciding to dive right in and not wait for anyones cue.
Another Go Round
It’s like this:
Fool me once, shame on you.
Fool me twice, shame on me.
But I’d do it again in a heartbeat.
It’s about falling back into the same patterns despite knowing the risks and the likely outcome. On the surface its a love song, but this one is our song for the music industry. Deciding to give it another go and start from scratch, to expose yourself to the same opportunity for failure, criticism and rejection. But to do it knowingly because you just can’t help it, there is just some undeniable attraction, and a hope that maybe things will turn out different this time.
Thought Through
Well at this point there’s really no turning back is there? I guess we are committed. We thought that we were all in, but we were just falling asleep through our dreams again.
The Effort
Sometimes you just have to let go. You have to forgive. And not just other people, but also yourself. You have to accept the past and move on from it, and that can take a lot of work, a lot of effort. The Effort is about the frustration of someone shutting you out from their problems when you want so desperately to help them. Sometimes that person is yourself.
Ad Space
I remember being a child and thinking that when you grew up things would make sense and the world wouldn’t be so scary and daunting. Turns out I couldn’t have been more wrong. This song is simply about the confusion of everyday life, how easy it is to get lost in your daily routine and loose your direction completely. To work so hard on something, to try and keep a relationship going, and to suddenly realize you lost your way a long time ago. It don’t add up at all.
Illusion
This song is about the joy of getting lost in the illusion. Of letting go of your fears and concerns for just a moment to try and find something pure and true that lasts for just a split second. It may be a mirage, it may be fleeting, it may not even be real, but none of that matters in the moment you trick yourself into believing.
So Good
For all the attempts to intellectualize these songs for you, I gotta be real. This one is a pop song. Its about how good another person can make you feel and how impossible it is to put that into words.
Reality TV
The unreality of slick photoshop jobs and impossible jump cuts all set to the newest hit single really pervades culture. Everyone can be a celebrity on instagram and you can buy followers for your Facebook page. But none of its true. It takes time, just give us a minute to get our shit together. This isn’t Hollywood.
Air Conditioning
This one is about how sometimes, despite your greatest efforts, people just slip out of your life. Its no ones fault, but sometimes a force of will isn’t enough to keep it all together. The minute you turn the AC off the heat comes right back. Not much you can do about that.
Rosealene
Everyone values everything differently than everyone else. What is beauty to you? Rosealene is out there somewhere, and what or who they are is different for everyone.
I Hope You Know
If you don’t give the audience what they want, they aren’t gonna stay around for long. Its a fickle thing, and its hard to accept that this record is just a product, up for sale, up for stream, to inevitably end up pushed out of the press cycle in favor of whatever is next. Any one of these songs could be used as a vehicle to push another product, but its a product itself. That said, I hope you know, we really mean it, we really thought we had a good thing going, to us this isn’t just music for a car commercial.
