If you’re not familiar with cln, well it’s time you should be – the production wonder kid has been producing a sting of flawless down tempo original gems and remixes for a short while now. The Brisbane local has just this week released his stunning new EP titled Found which is nothing short of stunning.

Undeniably lush, the EP ebbs and flows organically, potentially inspired by the producer’s ability to draw inspiration from nature, as he explains “I like to go on walks in weird/remote places. I’m a bit of a nature nerd, so I’m generally looking for birds and animals. Being alone in the middle of nowhere surrounded by nothing but nature is a pretty cool feeling; so I think I subconsciously translate those feelings into my music. The earth is cool place”

To celebrate the release of Found cln has given us a track by track run down of the EP. Check out the dynamic five-track collection of unique electronic soundscapes and their explanations below.

Found

Found is the result of scrapping a project about 3 times and just taking the best bits to a new project. My production is super messy and unorganised; so when I spend a long time on a song I sometimes get to a point where I’m just frustrated and unhappy with it. I’ve found that the best way to overcome this is to pick a few elements that I really like, and just throw the rest away.
The whole EP involves me experimenting with my own vocals, so the voices in ‘Found’ are all my own. I didn’t want the voices to be the feature aspect of the song though, so I used them quite subtly and let the instrumental do most of the work. I think this song is my favourite on the EP, I got quite attached to it over the many late nights I spent working on it. I’m particularly fond of the brass section near the end.

Left Behind

Left Behind has also undergone numerous transformations since the first demo. I really wanted to step up my sound design this EP, so all the synth sounds are made from scratch. No presets. The synth sound in the drop is made from about 4 different layers, with a bunch of automation to give it the weird wobbly sounds. Again, the brass bit is my favourite part of this track. I’ve really been enjoying the weird combination of synth and brass lately.

Bricks

Sometimes song take weeks, and sometimes they don’t take me long at all, Bricks was one of those super fast ones. I think I finished, mixed and mastered it in about 3 hours. It’s weird how your brain works sometimes. Bricks is probably the heaviest song on the EP. I wanted the songs to be pretty versatile, so I could play them in club shows too.

Hold Me

Hold me was the first time I ever used my own voice in my productions. It’s a bit rough around the edges as it was recorded super ghetto in my room, but I think rough around the edges is okay sometimes. If everything was perfect the world would be kinda boring.

Clockwork

The lyrics have been warped slightly beyond recognition, but ‘Clockwork’ is meant to explore the concepts of death and time. Life and death are pretty weird concepts, and when you think about them you tend feel a bit insignificant and small. I wanted Clockwork to be the final song, since it explores the ideas of ending/being finite. I thought it was kinda fitting, I dunno.
