Local artist Geno Carrapetta has recently unveiled his brand new effort, an exciting and impress concept album titled The Last Wave – out now via Movie of the Week Records.

As the enigmatic Carpetta explains “The Last Wave is a concept album that is named after and inspired by Peter Weir’s 1977 Australian New Wave film also titled The Last Wave, with its mystical and spiritual themes of transcendence and prophecy.”

“The Last Wave is an Audio/Video spiritual journey of self discovery and identity, exploring and celebrating: religious fanaticism, televangelists, new religious movements, cults, delusional disorders, brainwashing, the self help movement, new age thinking and modern enlightenment. Its sounds were primarily inspired by 70’s Funk, Soul and Soft Rock.”

To celebrate its release Carpetta has given us a track by track run down of the LP, which you can check out below. If you like what you’re hearing be sure to visit his Facebook page for more info.

Magic Time

“The Last Wave was conceived at home in London during the cold and wintery month of November 2014, I was able to lock myself away in my bedroom whilst being confined to the house in a very sickly and feverish state of delirium, which I think had a big impact on the overall loose and low-fi sound of the record.

Leading up to the recording I had a viewing of Peter Weir’s 1977 Australian New Wave classic ‘The Last Wave’. This inspired a concept album based on the film with its mystical and spiritual themes of transcendence and prophecy, which was strangely in line with some of my recent interest in extreme self help measures and a trip to a very intense Pentecostal mass as well as a few other strange synchronicities.

Thematically it is a spiritual journey of self discovery and identity, exploring and celebrating: religious fanaticism, televangelists, new religious movements, cults, delusional disorders, brainwashing, the self help movement, new age thinking and modern enlightenment. I consider it to have been a magic time.”

Black Rain

“‘Black Rain’, some dark and delirious disco. I wanted The Last Wave it to have a strong visual representation to further expand on the concept and themes of the album, so all together they form one whole piece.

The videos and artwork which were quite public access inspired were cooked up whilst I was back in Oz at the start of this year. The video for Black Rain features my father Antonio a frequent collaborator in my video projects.”

The Guru

“In a way the centre piece of the album, the deranged ‘Guru’, he can’t help you, he can’t help himself, but at least he can get funky. That’s my brother the one and only Edward Housden shredding it up on guitars for this one, as well as on most tracks on the album.”

Magic Man

“Listening back to it now, if I had to describe what The Last Wave sounds like. It’s a little like something an intoxicated member of Funkadelic decided very late one night to make a yacht rock record whilst watching the early films of Peter Weir at a self help seminar.”

Strange Weather

“The Peter Weir homage is hitting its peak on this track. Hasn’t the weather been strange…”

Dream is a Shadow

“This one is definitely channelling some drunken yacht rock, think may have fallen off the boat here.”

Sister Chance, Sister Fate

“Entering more spiritual territories with this track. Seeking the healing power of music.”

One & Only

“I think this is probably my favourite moment on the album, it was one of the first things recorded and it sort of set the tone for the album. It came rather quickly in one late night stream of consciousness session, going through a heavy scene on this one. Felt liberating to get it out of the system.”

Magic (Revisited)

“Revisiting the magic…”

The Last Wave

“The Finale, letting it all out, the whole project felt very therapeutic to work on and there is a great feeling of catharsis attached to its completion.”
