Melbourne’s new R&B soul four piece have recently dropped their killer new self-titled EP. Nine months in the making, the track was produced by Jono Steer at Sing Sing studios in Melbourne.

Drawing influence from local progressive soul talents like Hiatus Kaiyote as well as channelling more classic hip hop vibes from J Dilla, the crew have managed to wrap up a lot into this tight three track EP.

To celebrate the release of this EP – Phoebe Webster the band’s vocalist has given us a track by track rundown of the record which you can check out below along with the stream. If you like what you’re hearing pick up your copy of the EP via Bandcamp and follow the band via Facebook.

Glass

“I wrote these lyrics about the fact that I was kind of involved with two different people at the same time – one I really liked and the other that really liked me.

I figured there was some disproportionate affection flying all over the place in my world and that I was definitely digging myself into a bit of a hole. The lyrics came so quickly to me that we finished the whole song over the course of one rehearsal.

Gordon came up with a lot of the song including the hook – we all decided to play/sing it in unison because it’s a fun line and it’s really a moment that we get excited about. It feels powerful to play it live together, we all fuel each other energy wise in this one.”

Pools

“We wrote Pools at a friend’s house (the Flemington Mansion) that we were invading for a rehearsal one day.

The boys came up with this amazingly cruisey and catchy polyrhythmic beat and we all jumped on board instantly. Me and the other two vocalists that feature on this track started with some ooo’s and aaaah’s and worked it from there.

We actually have an iPhone recording of the night that the song was written, we were originally just recording the instruments so we wouldn’t forget the groove but I started singing some pool themed words and you can hear on the recording the boys shouting ideas at each other while us singers were discussing the harmonies. It was really incredibly organic!”

Window

“‘Window’ has been kicking around the band for a while now, it’s definitely transformed the most out of any of the song on the EP. The content comes from when I was still living in Footscray, I was sitting in my second floor bedroom with the midi files of the song and I was looking out my open window and thinking about what it would be like to just jump out and run along all the rooftops.

I had been a bit shit at life – partying too hard and getting home on the 5am train, sleeping in and skipping uni, not eating well. ‘Window’ is about making changes and acknowledging that you haven’t quite got in together but can still take opportunities as they come and turn it all around.”
