Natalie Foster is one of those girls, those singer-songwriter types. She knows it too. She knows what she’s good at; so she writes Natalie on Natalie. Tully On Tully.

You started your music career when you won a songwriting competition at NMIT, tell us about the winning songs and can we hear them in a Tully on Tully set?

If you do some intense detective work, you might be able to find a copy of the two songs but otherwise we don’t play them anymore… One was called ‘Dedicated to Martin’ and the other was ‘These Moments’. They’re both very different to the songs we are playing now.

How would you describe your music to anyone who has never heard it?

I’d probably just show it to them. I’m awful at describing things and yet I write lyrics that do just that. But I guess I might say that we write alternative pop songs with a focus on lyrics and arrangements.

What inspired you to become a musician?

I was always incredibly jealous of my brothers’ friends being in cool bands…

Do you play any rare musical instruments that we don’t know about? Like maybe the spoons…

I’m actually pretty good at playing wine glasses! I went on a school French trip to New Caledonia and annoyed everyone in a restaurant by playing “When The Saints Go Marching In” until I mastered it.

You must answer this question honestly. What and where was the first gig you went to?

When I was a kid, I went to see James Morrison play trumpet at Her Majesty’s theatre with my parents. Despite how loud it was I actually managed to fall asleep for a majority of the concert! Funnily enough, it’s not the only time that’s happened… I slept through Steely Dan Last year!

You’ve already collaborated with some other Aussie artists including Hayden Calnin of your current single ‘Stay’, which local artist would you most like to work with?

Eagle and the Worm would be fun!

2012 was a busy year for you, what was your biggest highlight?

There were so many highlights last year! But for me, it was definitely the single launch. The crowd was amazing, I had my sparkly dress on, we had sweet decorations thanks to my housemate and everybody’s family was able to make it down.

How do you find new music?

I’m pretty slack when it comes to actually finding new music. I scout blogs a few of times a year but I generally just keep up with what the rest of the band is into. We have similar enough tastes for me to be kept happy.

What is your band’s music the best soundtrack for?

A teenage soap opera, a younger less angsty version of Twighlight

Where we can see you play next, what releases do you have available and where can we get them?

We’ve just release our single, ‘Stay’ (feat. Hayden Calnin) and are launching it on the 25th January at Ding Dong Lounge in Melbourne and on the 8th February at Karova Lounge in Ballarat. It’s available to purchase from www.tullyontully.bandcamp.com but I highly recommend coming to the launch/es.
