You know, the phrase “The Simpsons predicted it” is thrown around a lot these days. The show famously “prophecised” that Donald Trump would become the US president, but fans claim The Simpsons has predicted a bunch of other stuff too.

The most recent cab (or Cat, if you will) off the rank is a classic. Twitter reckons that the long-running series may have predicted the Cats flop of late last year.

The alleged prediction comes from the season 17 episode, “The Girl Who Slept Too Little”. The moment in question? An Itchy & Scratchy cartoon from within the show. In the cartoon, Scratchy attends a film adaptation of the musical, Cats. After watching for a few minutes, Scratchy remarks that, “this is so boring” before shooting himself in the head. The End.

I mean, look. There are a definitely a few points of similarity between the episode and last year’s Cats trainwreck. For one thing, a Cats cinematic adaptation hadn’t been attempted at the time of the episode’s airing. There was a lowkey, direct-to-video film released in 1998, but who knows whether The Simpsons writers would’ve even been aware of that.

The negative reception to the film portrayed in the Itchy & Scratchy cartoon is the main leg on which this theory stands. But of course, the idea of a Cats movie had been lampooned in the media for years before the episode aired.
