Remember the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge? It was a viral sensation back in 2014 intended to raise money for the ALS Association and promote awareness of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (though it was also an excuse for tweens to get likes on Facebook).
The challenge involved dumping a bucket of ice water over your head to simulate the feeling of stiff muscles and twitching brought on by ALS, and then nominating friends to do the same. The campaign raised $100m in donations for the ALS Association alone.
Inspired by the success of the Ice Bucket Challenge, the Childhood Cancer Association is looking to raise over $1 million through their own viral challenge, which has already roped in several prominent Aussie musicians, athletes, and TV stars.
The Ultimate Pie Challenge is pretty much what it sounds like. “We’re asking everyone to accept the challenge of having a pie smooshed in their face, post a video of the smooshing, nominate three people to do the same and donate online,” the CCA writes.
“Funds raised will support children living with cancer, and their families. The Childhood Cancer Association relies solely on the generous support of the community to enable it to continue to provide vital services and support to children and families in need.”
They’re looking to raise over $1 million by 30th April 2016 and they’re off to a pretty good start, having drawn attention from several musos, who’ve kicked off a domino effect that could result in every Aussie musician getting a pie smooched in their face by the end of April.
After being nominated by former Recovery host Dylan Lewis, Hilltop Hoods took on the challenge, donating $1,000 to the CCA and nominating rapper Tuka, triple j host and rapper in his own right Hau, and Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull.

Tuka has since gone on to complete the challenge and nominated Canberra EDM duo Peking Duk and his Thundamentals bandmates DJ Morgs, Poncho, and Jeswon. The nominees will of course select their own nominees and then it’s just a matter of time until we have footage of every Aussie muso covered in whipped cream.
Other notables who’ve already completed the Ultimate Pie Challenge for the Childhood Cancer Association include Sunrise host Kochie, members of Adelaide United FC, Roo and Ditts from Triple M Adelaide, and AFL player Travis Boak.
For more information about the Ultimate Pie Challenge, head on over to the Childhood Cancer Association website and remember, you don’t have to be nominated to complete the challenge, film yourself and start nominating friends now.
