In case you missed the memo Australian is getting a new camping heavy music festival set to draw in around 3000 punters from the 10th to the 11th of January next year. Bolstered by the country’s best hardcore, metal and punk acts Unify is set to rock South Gippsland the likes of which the area hasn’t seen before.

To get the lowdown in the newest entrant into the country’s turbulent music festival scene we spoke with Unified’s Luke Logemann about why the label decided to make the foray into music festivals, the Aussie lineup and what punters can expect from Unify’s premiere year and beyond.

What are you hoping to achieve with Unify?

Well for the moment the thought process is really pretty short term in it’s nature. We wanted to create a great event in a beautiful area showcasing the best Australian hardcore / metal / punk music we could find. Coming from the hardcore scene, I love the community behind heavy music and wanted to put on a medium sized event that would continue that tradition.

How did the idea for a heavy music camping festival come about? Was there any particular inspiration?

Funnily enough, it was actually Tone Deaf that gave me the idea. When we launched the viral campaign for Northlane’s “Singularity” album, you guys wrote an article speculating about it being a UNFD branded festival. The internet went mental over that article and it made me think “I should probably put together a UNFD branded festival. Luckily, the boys from The Hills Are Alive had a similar idea and they brought it to us. So here we are!

Is there particular aspect of the festival you’re most excited about?

I have so many close friends in the bands that are playing, and the media / crew / Unified staff coming down. To have that many people I love in the one place will be probably the most fun couple of days of my life. I can’t wait.

What we can expect to see off the stage, what will the location be like?

It’s actually an entirely new location, it’s about 25 minutes South of THAA Farm. It’s set in a small town called Tarwin Lower over a recreation reserve. It’s a beautiful site lined with trees and places to sit, some shade etc. We’re doing everything we can to make the whole experience as amazing as possible with stuff like mini golf, small DJ parties, late night cinema and whatever else comes to mind before January. We just want people to have fun the whole time they are there.

Why did you guys decide to go for a camping festival rather than a 1 day/ 2 day festival?

It just seems like a lot more fun. The UK and Europe are all about it over their Summer and events like Meredith, Falls and The Hills Are Alive have proved how much Australian’s love the outdoors.

How did you go about choosing the line up? We noticed that all the bands are Aussie, was it a conscious decision to keep the lineup local?

Yeah the Aussie thing was important to us. We love the Australian scene and wanted to just showcase how many awesome bands there are. Obviously we manage a fair few of the bands on the lineup (Amity, Northlane, In Hearts Wake, Deez Nuts and Stories) and work with many others as well in various capacities, but we tried to include as many cool bands from across the scene as we could.

What’s the plan for the future of Unify?

Lets see how the first event goes and then see. It’s all about this year and having the most fun possible.
