Mansfield grunge manics Violent Soho and The Amity Affliction, one of Australia’s most popular hardcore bands, are throwing their support behind an Aussie independent record store that has proclaimed it is “fucking dead”.
Brisbane’s Kill The Music has been a firm favourite among record store aficionados since the punk, rock, and hardcore specialist first opened in the CBD in 2006, but recently announced it would be closing its doors forever.
A video posted to the independent store’s Facebook page last month offered a virtual tour of the store before signing off with the fatal announcement: “Kill The Music, is fucking… dead.”
Despite the recent vinyl resurgence that’s seen sales double in Australia, Kill The Music is just one of many independent retailers that have faced an uphill battle against corporate competition, shrinking margins, and a general lethargy towards the value of music from a younger (non) music-buying public weened on getting it for free.
Messages of support for the store flooded in over social media following the announcement, with Kill The Music’s owner Paul Voge acknowledging the “crazy amount of love” he’d received over the news of the closure, in a lengthy Facebook post explaining that financial strains and debts had placed the Brisbane staple into early retirement after seven years of service.
One local band heeding the plight of the record store is Brisbane’s Violent Soho, who have announced a Kill The Music benefit show, to take place at Crowbar on Monday 23rd December, as Music Feeds points out.
“If you didn’t know, Kill The Music has been forced to shut it’s doors next month,” wrote the four-piece on their Facebook page. “The store’s owner (and all round good guy) Paul has done a great deal for the Brissie music scene over the years and we’re stoked to be able to give something back to him.”

Tickets for the Violent Soho show (with a poster featuring the MS Paint artwork of Sarah Thompson) are $15 (+b/f) from Oztix and all proceeds from the show will go towards aiding Voge and Kill The Music.
UPDATE 11/12: Violent Soho’s label I OH YOU are “happy to report that [the band’s] fundraiser show for Kill The Music is now sold out and did so in less than 24hrs. Thanks to all the legends who have ran out to support this great record store. Paul Voge, you’re a fucking legend.”
Playing over at the Brisbane Hi-Fi the night before Violent Soho are ARIA-topping hardcore heroes, The Amity Affliction, whose Sunday 22nd December gig is billed as a Kill The Music benefit concert.
“Get down and help us support these guys who gave so much to independent music in Brisbane,” note the band, who will be joined by Wish For Wings, The Daylight Curse, and in Ashes We Lie
“I’m speechless,” wrote Voge, expressing his thanks to both Brisbane outfits on a social media post. “The people that have helped to make this [happen] will forever mean more to me than a status update can attest. What is happening can change my families[sic] life for the next 12 months and it’s all because a bunch of punk rock dudes are putting on some punk rock shows. Shit is awesome!!”
