So goes the press release for This Is Nowhere 2012, a shiny new music event making its debut in the occasionally festival starved state of Western Australia. Even better, is that the feast of local and international acts will be playing at the University of Western Australia.
Music lovers of many varieties are invited to indulge in the subterranean sounds of artists from home and afar. An audible buffet of musicians and performers who will be treating punters to a bevy of musical styles. Some familiar, some foreign; some underground and some more surface-inclined; to those you can sit peacefully and listen to and those others – who will make you want to dance.
The setting for This Is Nowhere has been carefully selected to enhance the already enchanting sounds of the line-up. Feast your ears on tasty tunes in a clearing beneath a canopy of pines, where the light only dapples, to a theatre where the audience is one with the acts on stage, and a courtyard full of giant manmade mushrooms.
Under 18’s are not invited, which means you’re free to wander with drink-in-hand. Delicious and affordable food and beverage merchants will ensure no one goes empty-stomached (or empty-pocketed). There will be plenty of toilets; lots of parking and public transport options; plus a plethora of fun things to do. Capacity is limited so everyone will have enough room for their own uninterrupted experience. A party of like-minded music lovers will surround you, and your musical experience is all that matters.
Taking place at the Somerville Auditorium, Lawrence Jackson Court and Dolphin Theatre on the campus at the University of Western Australia, the lineup of dancefloor-orientated electronic acts for the Dolphin Theatres is still on it way, but for now, organisers are letting slip on the secrets of the bills for Somerville and Lawrence Jackson Court.
The former features some of USA’s best and brightest cult talent, including post-rock pioneers Tortoise, avant-garde Californians Xiu Xiu and prolific instrumentalists Grails; along with London’s much-hyped HTRK, and our own buzz acts The Bank Holidays and High Tea from Melbourne.
Meanwhile, the Lawrence Jackson court is being dubbed ‘The Inglorious Buskers’ for the bevy of singer/songwriter types who’ll be dwelling there including Racheal Dease, David Craft and Alex Griffin.
