Whether you like him or not, there’s no denying Father John Misty is one of modern music’s most intriguing and creative figures. Musically, his ability to harken back to the crooning piano ballads of Elton John, combined with the theatrical stylings of chamber pop, indie rock, and folk and appropriate them for fickle hipster audiences is admirable.
Public persona-wise, his oh-so-ironic, hyper-meta take on society and it’s flaws may rub people the wrong way. Is he being serious? Does he actually believe he’s above the rest of us? Are we just mere mortals in the presence of a deity? We’ll never know.
At his show at Sydney’s Enmore Theatre last night, the High Priest accepted his Grammy award, taking the opportunity to give the audience some sage advice about the state of the world.
“I don’t have a whole lot of time, but, God, fuck, I just wanna say fuck society.I wanna say that this government is a criminal organisation. Uh, FlatEarth.com, please go check that out.” Prolific.
Father John Misty was awarded the Grammy for Best Recording Package but was not present to accept the award due to Australian touring commitments.
Speaking about what his award recognised, he added: “Everybody was always saying that, like, it’s what’s on the inside that matters, you know, and I think this is really evidence of the fact that it’s what’s outside that matters.”
