Dave Grohl has an interesting relationship with Tom Petty.
After the tragic end of Nirvana, Grohl almost joined Petty’s band the Heartbreakers, going so far as to appear on Saturday Night Live as the band’s new drummer. Ultimately, Grohl chose not to join the band, instead pursuing his own solo project: a collection of rock songs he had written and recorded all the parts for, under the low-key moniker Foo Fighters. We all know how that worked out for him.
Over two decades after Grohl’s Sliding Doors moment, (Friday night, to be precise) a number of musicians gathered to pay tribute to Tom Petty at the MusiCares Person of the Year ceremony, including the Fooeys.
Foo Fighters performed two Petty songs during the ceremony: ‘Honey Bee’ and ‘Breakdown’ – the latter of which saw the band’s Sonic Highways collaborator Gary Clark Jr. join them on stage.
Check out portions of both performances, below.
