Rising Dunedin genre-defying MC (and ex-carpet salesman) WAX MUSTANG today announces his first Australian live show at Sydney’s Oxford Arts Factory Gallery Bar, off the back of a successful summer touring at some of New Zealand’s top music festivals, including supporting Six60’s massive show to 50,000 people.
His debut Australian date follows the drop of his latest single, ‘Mustang World’.
Wax Mustang is a force to be reckoned with, either in your headphones or on any stage you find him. Mustang’s music somehow finds a balance between throwback hip-hop and 80’s rock. We’re not sure how he does it, but we guess that adds to the enigma that is… Wax Mustang.
Don’t miss Wax Mustang’s first trip across the ditch to Australia this April!

How have you found it starting out as a musician in Dunedin?

No complaints here – I was lucky to go on a hot streak and maybe set the record for most student parties played in a year (unofficial). I think they are the best events to play – you can tell if the crowd is bored or what songs people are into. In terms of making the music I don’t want to be anywhere else and it helps to have a good forward pack of friends either directly helping or giving honest feedback.
You’ve been really well received, particularly in Dunedin – to the point where people at your shows know words to your songs – what do you see as the appeal of Wax Mustang?
I’m yet to figure it out. I think NZ music in general lacks some personality and the basis of Mustang was to blow everything out of proportion – become this larger than life character if you will. Perhaps it’s just the rapping – I try to stay humble about everything that comes my way but that doesn’t apply to the bars, as it shouldn’t. Is anyone rapping this good anymore?
