James Blake – ‘200 Press’
Continuing to evolve his electronic sound, Blake’s new 16-minute EP ‘200 Press’ – released under his own dance-oriented label 1800-Dinosaur – contains glimmers of the English producer’s most club-skewed work to date. The title track – called that because it’s only getting 200 vinyl presses – is a deep and sweaty slow burner driven by wobbly, off-kilter synths, clanging cow bells and warped vocal samples. (DM)
Touch Sensitive – ‘Teen Idols’
As most years of late, 2014 has been a great year for Sydney label Future Classic, and to celebrate they’re releasing a compilation LP.
Titled Teen Idols: a Future Classic Compilation, The LP features 12 of their favourite tracks from the past 12 months with new music from a couple of label stalwarts. Set for release December 19, it is available for pre-order now with Touch Sensitive’s title track ‘Teen Idols’ available for instant download. Bangers. (LH)
Twerps – ‘Shoulders’
Melbourne’s favourite jangle-popsters Twerps have been working bloody hard this year, having already released an 8-track EP of blissful songs entitled Underlay, the four-piece have also been putting the final touches on their forthcoming LP Range Anxiety, and have just revealed a brand-spanking new track, ‘Shoulders’.
The song begins with the familiar Twerps styling high-toned chiming guitars as Jules McFarlane’ soothing vocals weave through the simple, dreamlike sonics, creating the perfect Aussie summer chill-out tune. (JH)
Dick Diver – ‘Waste The Alphabet’
Is it too late to crown “Aussie song of the year”? Maybe so, but we’ll tell ya what, Dick Diver’s brand-spanking newie is most definitely a high contender. The fresh track from Melbourne’s crown jewel of jangle-pop sees the four-piece produce unquestionably one of the most carefree and euphoric sounds of your summer. (JH)
Total Giovanni – ‘Can’t Control My Love’
It’s that time of year where we declare every synth banger a “summer anthem” and while ‘Can’t Control My Love’ isn’t technically a banger it does fulfil the groove criteria to make it worthy of being added to this season’s playlist. Put your headphones on, close your eyes and dance as unashamedly as you like, you just can’t control your love. (CT)
Worlds End Press – ‘Spirals (Slide Away)’
This four-piece know their way around a synth dance jam and while ‘Spirals’ still maintains those core elements it sounds more like they’ve turned ‘Thriller’ into an ominous and tortured beast than it does an infectious anthem.
Jeremy Neale – ‘The News’
Part rock, part synth, full time infectiousness ‘The News’ will have you toe-tappin your way through the dancefloor. So much so you won’t even realise that the song details that moment when your life is smashed back into reality via the most unexpected and devastating news. (CT)
