Sudden tragedy has struck family, friends and Weezer fans on 8th October after the unexpected death of former bassist Mikey Welsh in his Chicago hotel room. At just 40 years old, he was found on the floor of his room by staff after not checking out on time.

The official Weezer Twitter page read “We are shocked and deeply saddened to hear the awful news, our friend and fellow Weezer rocker @mikeywelsh71 has passed away. We love you Mikey.”

A chilling premonition was voiced via Welsh’s Tweeter page on 26th September, only two weeks prior to his death stating that he had a hunch that he would die, predicting the time and location.

“Dreamt I died in Chicago next weekend (heart attack in my sleep),” he wrote. “Need to write my will today.” He later stated “Correction, weekend after next.”

Boston-bred Welsh joined the band in 2000 for less than one year and recorded on Weezer’s 2000 self-titled release also referred to as ‘The Green Album’. He was known as pushing the boundaries whilst playing with Weezer and having an exuberant stage presence. With art being his first love, followed closely by music, Welsh was a gifted visual artist and most commonly known for his infallible abstract paintings.

Recognised for being a ‘tortured soul’, Welsh had previously attempted suicide before quitting the band back in 2001, after a psychological breakdown.

The cause of death has not yet been determined, however there is speculation it may have been a drug overdose.
