Exuding cohesion and confidence, Lurch & Chief’s second EP illustrates the Melbourne sextet’s rapid growth and progression since their first release ‘Paranoia’, not 18 months earlier.
Harsh instrumentation against the golden harmonies of Hayden Somerville and Lili Hall make ‘Mother/Father’ a welcoming introduction to what’s ahead. It’s a risky but worthwhile act, setting the tone of the album with such a stellar first track.
It’s not surprising that following track ‘We Are The Same’ has attracted Triple J airplay and generated a wealth of hype.
The soft “do, do, do’s”, following build-up, and simultaneous yet contrasting lyrics generate powerful emotions. The strength in Somerville’s conviction plays an integral part in the song’s success.
A darker, heavier ‘90s vibe is introduced with by the EP’s title track. Toning down the upbeat qualities, ‘Wiped Out’ illustrates the band’s versatility and allows them to explore some instrumental psych sounds.
‘It’s Easy’ has an intriguing holistic balance between being seductive and yet romantically tortured. The song drifts close to the line of dull repetition, but is redeemed by Lili’s unique vocal quivers.
It’s undeniable that Lurch & Chief have a killer knack to create catchy, cheese-free hooks. ‘On Your Own’ is yet another prime example, featuring an enjoyable vocal switch as the two singers move from harmony to conversation.
