Reports from Camp Wyclef suggest that the recording artist and producer may be running as a candidate in Haiti’s next Presidential election. Wyclef Jean, of Fugees fame, has been a public supporter of and activist for Haiti, where he was born before relocating to Brooklyn, NY.
In 2007 he was appointed ambassador-at-large by President Rene Preval, who cannot seek re-election this year. However, it is not certain whether Wyclef will seek the full five-year term as leader.
Following the 6 month anniversary of the earthquake that destroyed much of its infrastructure, Wyclef would have a big task on his hands, but says he wants to focus on building strength with the youth community. In a recent interview he said “Do I have political intentions? At this time no. But what I do have is a movement – it’s called Face a Face, ‘Face to Face,'” Jean said. “The youth population … we are going to encourage them to vote.”
We hope his political career doesn’t end quite like his song If I Was President
‘If I was president,
I’d get elected on Friday, assassinated on Saturday,
and buried on Sunday.’
