We’re excited to announce that the sixth artist to be announced as part of Apple Music’s Up Next Local series is none other than Young6ix.

Apple Music’s Up Next Local series is dedicated to identifying and showcasing rising talent across Australia and New Zealand, hand-picked by Apple Music editors from around the world.

Young6ix is the next artist to be featured in the local program, shining a spotlight on his crazy lyricism paired with catchy hooks, enabling the rapper to become a force to reckon with on the Australian Drill scene.

In addition to the Up Next playlist across Australia and New Zealand, Young6ix has also been featured in a number of others including: NMDThe New Australia (also with support from Briggs on The New Australia Radio show) Rap Life and #OnRepeat.

It’s only up from here for Young6ix and we were lucky enough to have a chat to the artist on his music style, why he makes music and more.

Take us through how you developed your music style?

Growing up in Mount Druitt and seeing what goes on there on a day to day basis and the day to day struggle, as well as the lack of opportunities coming from where I’m from.

What do you see as your secret weapon when it comes to your music?

My flow coz can’t nobody do it like me and my consistency since dropping my first single featuring my brother Skenzzo. My drip is lit too.

Tell us about your latest single; how it started, what it’s about, and anything else you’d like to share about it.

My manager linked a session with Inferno and Pax. We got a dope beat by Pax that we heard in less than 5 minutes and knew that was it, so we all jumped on it with our own flow and it was madness.

What are five attributes you think an artist needs to have in order to have career longevity in this music industry?

  • Long term mindset
  • The story
  • The heart
  • Be determined
  • Be ready for new things
  • Hard working
  • Consistency

Why do you make music? What’s your great big ‘why’?
It’s a way to have a voice to speak about our issues and everyday stories. To help support my family and give a voice to the trenches.

What’s something that you’re really excited about right now?
The venue bans have been lifted so definitely shows, more music, more opportunities and being a student of the game.

If we gained access to a few songs you have on repeat at the moment, what would we find?
‘Back In Blood’ – Lil Durk and Polo G – ‘RAPSTAR’. Also Digga D, Young OFB and Zone 2.

What’s something your fans don’t know about you, but you want to share with them?
I am quite the chef 😉 (my signature meal is Cassava leaf and rice – a Liberian dish) and basketball is my favourite sport . LA LAKERS is my team (LeBron is on a madness since he returned from injury).

What does Apple Music’s support through Up Next mean to you?
Means all. Means a lot showing kids my age they can do it too and not to give up because coming from Mounty there’s not really much motivation to achieve anything outside the normal crime, violence and drugs.
