Australia is about to get a brand new live music venue that’s already setting itself apart from the pack. The Fat Controller, an underground warehouse space, is the latest addition to Adelaide’s live music scene.

As Rip It Up reports, The Fat Controller will be taking over the former home of The Cavern beneath North Terrace and is being handled by the hard-working folks behind spaces like Royal Croquet Club and Little Miss Dive Shop.

“I’ve been wanting to do this sort of concept for a long time,” co-owner Stuart Duckworth told Rip It Up. “The whole idea is a music venue which isn’t genre-specific, it’s malleable, it’s flexible in the sense it can host an array of different acts.”

The venue recently announced a whole raft of quality upcoming acts. Things got off to a promising start last month when Neon Indian’s 10th December Meredith Music Festival sideshow was one of the first gigs to be confirmed for the venue.

The roster is definitely flying in the face of genre specificity, with upcoming performances from San Cisco, Asta, Client Liaison, Dune Rats, The Delta Riggs, Bad//Dreems, North East Party House, and many more.

“The focus is on entertainment and the experience rather than the venue itself, it’s not too design heavy, it’s not too one dimensional,” Duckworth explained. “A warehouse is very stark and raw and rustic and plain and that’s the whole idea, taking the warehouse style of venue into the city.”

The space is currently undergoing renovations and will be stripped back from its former incarnation. The new decor will be taking advantage of the venue’s underground location, inspired by similar spaces in London and New York.

“Playing off the location was a really interesting angle for us to go down, and helped us come up with a concept,” Duckworth said. “It has evolved since then – a basement live venue near the railway station is kind of a dark take on a more lighthearted children’s character – the Fat Controller is now a recluse in a basement.”

As for the name: “It was originally unintentional,” Duckworth said. “But we realised early on, [and] that was the final piece of the pie that made the name stick. It was a sign I think.” The Fat Controller is due to open later this month.
