The global rise of Courtney Barnett is undoubtedly the Australian breakout success story of 2015, with the young, Melbourne-based songwriter garnering international acclaim and selling out shows around the world.

But while Barnett is undoubtedly talented, there’s a lot going on behind the scenes that has ensured her music makes it our ears in the first place. That’s where people like Nick O’Byrne, Barnett’s manager, come in.

O’Byrne recently appeared alongside Carlo Santone, member and manager of Blue King Brown, on the Anatomy Podcast to discuss artist management and clear up some of the misunderstandings that surround managers.

The pair discussed some of the basics all artists should know in order to correctly set their expectations; the responsibilities of a manager, an agent, and a label; how music copyright and label advances work; and more.
