We hate to burst the bubble of At The Drive-In fans who have been hoping to hear news about new material from the recently reformed Texan rock group, but sadly there won’t be any new songs.
In an interview with Kerrang!, guitarist Omar Rodriguez-Lopez delivered the bad news to fans saying, “Will there be a new album? No, no, no. At The Drive-In is more of a nostalgia thing – it’s songs we wrote when we were all in our 20s and we’re doing a couple of shows.”
“It’s an old T-shirt that doesn’t fit me any more,” he continued. “But when you put it on again, it feels nice. It’s as simple as that.”
Rodriguez-Lopez also said he was amazed that fans were surprised by the reunion announcement. “For the rest of the world,” he said. “[the reformation] seemed to be out of nowhere, but we’ve been hanging out for the past four years. We patched up our differences a while ago.”
The reformation of the band had been a hot topic for years since the band split under acrimonious circumstances in 2001 when frontman Cedric Bixler-Zavala felt that some of the other members were holding him back creatively.
Cedric and other member Omar Rodriguez-Lopez both left and went on to form The Mars Volta, while the remaining three members of the group formed the band Sparta.
Rodriguez-Lopez also admitted in an interview with NME that the reunion is about rekindling friendships and making money. “We’re not getting any younger and there’s been an offer of money every year,” he admitted. “You can’t avoid that. You’d be a fool and a politician to pretend that wasn’t part of it.”
“Obviously [the reunion] is going to be weird. It’s like getting back with your ex-wife, only in this case there are four ex-wives!”
The group are scheduled to play Coachella later this year, but no other dates have been confirmed.
