Your debut EP is out on August 10! What can listeners expect to hear and where can we get it?
Each song on the EP is quite unique and reflects how we have evolved as a band over the last year. We tend to write most of our songs in the rehearsal studio, so the songs tend to have a live feel to them. You can get the EP on Itunes, JB HI FI, Band camp and at our shows.
What are your usual processes when recording?
We tracked this EP live at Hot House, and then recorded overdubs at Jaya Jaya Music. We spent quite a lot of time on pre-production and restructured different elements in the songs. I even rewrote some of the lyrics while we were in the studio. We were focused on making the songs the best that they can be.
Members of the band have worked on music projects in various places, including Sydney, Melbourne and New York. How do these different environments effect your music?
Living in different countries can be very inspiring. Each city had a very unique music scene and it was great immersing ourselves in the different music cultures. I think it has definitely influenced our songwriting in a positive way. It helps to be open minded about things, especially when it comes to creating music.
Who/what are your main influences when making music?
Each member of our band has their favorites, but for me it would have to be PJ Harvey, Joy Division, Sonic Youth, The Kills, BRMC and Brian Jonestown Massacre and The Church
When and how did Rain Party begin?
In 2010, After living overseas for a year, O and I moved to Melbourne with the intention of starting a new band. We met our guitarist Aaron shortly after and starting writing songs together. We needed a drummer to complete the lineup and through a mutual friend we met Andrew, who shared the same musical influences and passion for writing music.
How would you describe the Rain Party sound?
Because we write the songs together, our sound tends to be a combination of everyone’s different musical influences. I’d say we are a mix of rock and psychedelia with a dash of punk.
How do you like your music? On digital, CD, or vinyl (maybe even cassette)?
Records always sound the best, and I miss the days of mix tapes! Digital formats don’t sound as good, but it’s pretty convenient to have an Ipod when I’m travelling.
What has been your most memorable gig to date?
Supporting The Church at The Corner Hotel in Melbourne and The Factory Theatre in Sydney.
If you could play any venue/festival where would it be?
The Big Day Out would have to be top on my list, but I’m also a big fan of festivals like Homebake, Splendour In The Grass, and Harvest.
What else have you got in store for 2012? Where can we catch you playing next?
Our EP launch is at Cherry Bar on Friday 31st August, with supports from Mary Of The Moon and Whipped Cream Chargers. We are also doing a Sydney launch at FBI Social (Kings Cross Hotel) on Friday 14th September with supports from Young Romantics, Bang! Bang! Rock ‘n Roll and Yardvark.
Also, keep an eye out for our Music Video which will be released later this month.
