The Cosmic Pyschos are an Australian punk rock institution, the Melbourne underground band who have 30 years, 13 albums, and an enormous amount of touring and playing under their sizeable belts.

Their story is one of rock’s most interesting but also one of its most unsung, but all that changes with the release of Blokes You Can Trust, the feature-length rockumentary that tracks the Cosmic Psychos’ decades-long story, plus all the fascinating ups and downs in-between.

Aussie music fans, historians, and film buffs alike will get a chance to see one of the year’s best documentaries as Blokes You Can Trust is released to selected theatres nationwide next month, screening in theatres and cinemas from Thursday 8th August in six capital territories.

The band themselves and director Adam Weston will also be on hand for special Q&A sessions in New South Wales, at Paddington’s Chauvel Cinema, and Victoria, at Cartlon’s Cinema Nova (Full screening details at the bottom of the page).

The film, which features interviews and appearances from Pearl Jam vocalist Eddie Vedder, producer/Garbage member Butch Vig, the just-announced-for-Meredith Melvins, and grunge survivalists Mudhoney, was able to reach completion thanks to a crowdfunding campaign from director Adam Weston.

Calling for fan contributions and submissions, the Pozible campaign for Blokes You Can Trust hit its $28,000 target last August and eventually reached nearly $50,000 in fan backing. Pledgers to the documentary also received a series of unique rewards – including a meal cooked by the band and the Cosmic Psychos playing a gig at a farm in Mornington Peninsula for the fan who put in $5,000 to the film.

The rockumentary features some of Cosmic Psychos’ former labelmates from Sub Pop, who released the band’s second album when the band fell into the Seattle scene of the late 80s. Though they never quite found the mainstream success of their grunge counterparts, Cosmic Psychos toured heavily through America and Europe crafting their dedicated fan base.

But it wasn’t all shits and giggles. A heavy falling out with drummer and founding member Bill Walsh resulted in a line-up change and a bitter dedication on their new album with the song ‘Kill Bill’. They’ve been ripped off by several record labels, and dealt with the tragedy of the passing of guitarist Robbie Watts in 2006.

Though all that adversity, the band continues to remain strong to this day with the current lineup of Ross Knight, Dean Muller on drums, and John ‘Mad Macca’ McKeering (from the Onya’s) taking care of the guitar duties and also hit the road in August for the Blokes You Can Trust Tour.
