The Coachella 2014 lineup has been announced, and in characteristic fashion, the bill for the annual music festival is massive.
Held across three days in the Californian desert, and duplicated across two weeks, the 2014 lineup for one of America’s – and the world’s biggest – music events confirms some long held rumours.
The Coachella 2014 lineup’s three main headliners includes the the official reunion of hip hop duo Outkast, recent Australian vistors Muse, and forthcoming Big Day Out co-headliners Arcade Fire.
But perhaps of more interest for audiences Down Under is the appearance of a batch of Aussie bands among the huge list of names playing across the two weekends of April 12th to 14th and April 19th to 21st, set to continue the ‘Aussie Invasion’ of the last 12 months into 2014.
First off the rank is 22-year-old Sydney producer Harley Streten, better known to the music world as Flume. Set to tour Australia in a matter of weeks as part of the Big Day Out lineup, Flume is capitalising on his national notoriety after having the top selling Aussie album of 2013 and snaffling a huge number of awards for his trophy cabinet, and will be playing on the first night of Coachella 2014, headlined by Outkast.
Another Aussie band playing the opening date on the Coachella 2014 lineup is one of Flume’s Future Classic labelmates, Jagwar Ma, alongside the likes of The Knife, The Replacements, Girl Talk, Haim, The Cult, and more.
The Sydneysiders’ psychedellically-hued electronic rock has already seen British press falling head over heels to honour Jagwar Ma’s debut album, Howlin‘ (a favourite of Noel Gallagher and Paul Weller as much as Tone Deaf readers who ranked the LP as the fifth best Aussie album of 2013).
Regularly hailed as ‘the next Tame Impala’, Jagwar Ma are likely to conquer American audiences in the same way that Kevin Parker’s psych rockers did at Coachella 2012.
Another Coachella 2014 lineup act that might be familiar to American audiences already is The Preatures. The slick Sydney pop rock five-piece made major waves overseas last year thanks to the storming success of $50,000k-sized song, ‘Is This How You Feel?’ and its EP of the same name. The Preatures’ desert festival appearance follows their appearance at SXS 2014 as one of 40 Aussie bands invited to the annual music industry conference.
Playing on the second night of Coachella 2014, among an eclectic lineup of Queens Of The Stone Age, Skrillex, Pharrell Williams, is arena-sized electro outfit Empire Of The Sun, while rounding out the Aussie contingent on day three is popular indie electronic DJ duo Flight Facilities, fresh from smashing Falls and Southbound Festivals, and Sydney via LA producer-performer Anna Lunoe, bringing the total Australian tally to six.
Other highlights of the Coachella 2014 lineup include New Zealand sensation and Australian favourite Lorde, enduring metal overlords Motörhead, the reunited Neutral Milk Hotel, neo-chanteuse Lana Del Rey, Beck, Pet Shop Boys, Beck, Disclosure, Calvin Harris – the list goes on.
Advance tickets to Coachella 2014 and its dual weekend format (for the third year running) are already completely sold out, with a limited quantity of general admission weekend passes going on sale Friday 10th January on the official Coachella website).
Those that have missed out on tickets can lessen the sting by taking solace in the fact that the entire event will likely again be live streamed on YouTube (as per last year), and if nothing else, US late-night host Jimmy Kimmel will gift the internet with another round of trolling festival hipsters with fake bands (just brilliant).
