Smiths fans are swooning in excitement! At a press conference last night the English Football Association announced that The Smiths reunited for a one off recording which will be the England Squad’s official anthem at this year’s soccer World Cup in South Africa.

Morrissey and Johnny Marr, who haven’t spoken since The Smiths’ acrimonious split in 1987, have reunited of sorts with bass player Andy Rourke and drummer Mike Joyce to record a cover of the Australian Crawl song Boys Light Up. Morrissey and Marr, who are still refusing to speak to each other, recorded their parts in studios on opposite sides of the world.

Marr, who is currently recording in America, said: “It’s a great opportunity to support the team, and I’ve always been a huge Australian Crawl fan so it was just too good to resist”. Avid soccer fan Morrissey declined to comment but is believed to have recorded his vocals last month.

The single, which is available on 7” and as a download will come out on the band’s own Meat is Murder label, with all profits going to the Salford Lads’ Club, a Manchester youth charity. Click here to download the track
