Melbourne five-piece Snakadaktal have unexpectedly announced that they are breaking up, just months after releasing Sun II EP featuring six previously unreleased tracks, and embarking on a national tour.
Melbourne fans of the band have one final opportunity to see the band perform together this month, when they play a farewell show.
The band will perform on Saturday March 29th at the Northcote Social Club with support from I Oh You label mates City Calm Down, and Alan Palano. Tickets are on-sale now.
The shock announcement was made by the band on Facebook overnight, in a statement issued to fans.
“It saddens us to share with you that Snakadaktal has come to an end,” read the post. “Since we were 15, we have been sharing our passion for music together. Today, collectively, we feel that it is time to move onto different pursuits that we each individually wish to explore. ”
“Our goal has always been to create music that exists timelessly. We hope that what we have released will accompany you and be there for as long as you need it. It is yours to keep. We are proud of ourselves and feel fulfilled. It has been a journey we will treasure forever.”
Snakadaktal won triple J’s Unearthed High competition in 2011. They released their self-titled debut EP in November of the same year. The EP included the beautiful ‘Air’, which came in at #22 on triple J’s Hottest 100 in 2012.
In 2013, the stand-alone single ‘Dance Bear’ also made it into triple J’s Hottest 100, this time at #93. The band performed at last year’s Laneway Festival and toured in support of alt-J. In August, they released their debut album Sleep In The Water to wide acclaim. It came in at #9 on the ARIA Albums Chart.
The band’s label I Oh You, commented on the band’s split from Austin’s airport during SXSW. “Listening to Snakadaktal and feeling proud of our five young friends who have collectively and individually achieved so much (not just in music) over the time we’ve known them. We will always be very honoured to have been involved in the sharing of their art.”
