It’s been a relatively good year for Australia’s live music venues, despite some high profile losses such as the Palace Theatre in Melbourne.
In Melbourne the Shadow Electric band room went full-time, in Sydney there’s been the addition of The Roller Den, The Hub, and The Lewisham Hotel, while in Brisbane they’ve witnessed an explosion of great venues with The Brightside, and Triffid which is being built by former Powderfinger bassist John Collins.

Now Brisbane has another reason to celebrate, with another new live music venue set to open this coming weekend.
Christened Wolly Mammoth, the new venue is right next door to Ann Street’s legendary Cloudland, and taking over the spaces formerly known as Mustang Bar and Conistan Lane.
Wooly Mammoth consists of three distinct areas – Alehouse, Garden Bar and Mane Stage – the newly redeveloped, 3-part venue will cater for a cultural cross section of patrons with not one but two live performances spaces, and a stunning new party space.
Crafted by Alexander Lotersztain of Derlot Design, the interiors mastermind behind venues such as Depo, Alfred & Constance and Kwan brothers, every detail of the Wooly Mammoth interior and aesthetic has been labored over and perfected.
“We wanted to change the pace of the Valley,” says Lotersztain, “taking locals and varied visitors on a journey of quality craft beer, rustic food off-the-bone and some of the best entertainment in Brisbane.”
From the new entrance on Ann Street beer enthusiasts and music lovers prepare themselves for a feast that tickles all senses in Woolly Mammoth’s Alehouse. Featuring two bars, the Alehouse will host intimate comedy, burlesque and live world music, folk, blues, singer-songwriter, soul, funk and jazz shows; always with free entry.
At the top rear of the building, The Mane Stage is the venue’s purpose-built band room; with state of the art PA and production equipment, punters can expect large scale national and international touring acts on a weekly basis.
While Woolly Mammoth programs Mane Stage Saturday nights, with a focus on electronic and bass music hybrids, the venue remains open to bookings across a wide range of genres every other week night.
Finally, as an oasis between the fervor of The Mane Stage and the rustic allure of Alehouse comes Garden Bar. Situated above Alehouse on the first floor, Garden Bar is a green space full of plants and adorned with astro-turf for indoor bocce and giant Jenga.
The venue was soft-launched over the weekend, but the official launch party is this Friday the 26th of September with performances by The Potbelleez (DJ Set), The Gatling Gun, Cliftonia & Crema, and Cheap Fakes.
