In response to Arizona’s new immigration law, which gives police new powers to perform checks and arrest people on suspicion of being an illegal immigrant, Rage Against the Machine’s front man Zach De La Rocha has organised a protest The Sound Strike, which seeks to boycott Arizona. The protest is supported by the likes of Sonic Youth, Kanye West, Nine Inch Nails, Jenny Lewis and Conor Oberst of Bright Eyes Fame.
Oberst sent a scathing open letter to Billboard criticising those who supported the law. Now it has surfaced that Fremont in Oberst’s home state of Nebraska has passed a similar law. In another open letter to the press he wrote “I was outraged, saddened and embarrassed for their town and my state”. In a fervent state of political activism, Oberst has now announced Bright Eyes will be playing Concert for Equality in Omaha, and will reunite former pop/punk outfit The Desaparecidos for the event.
