Australia’s live music scene has had a few struggles this year, already we’ve seen Adelaide, Sydney and Perth not once, but twice announce closures of live music venues, and sadly, this bad news continues for Perth.
The WA capital was subject to a serious of a piece we published earlier this week, highlighting the state of their local live music scene after both The Bakery and Devilles Pad both announced that they would be closing, and now, unbelievably, another live music venue is closing its doors for the final time.
The Causeway, located at 243 Albany Highway Vic Park has announced via Facebook that they are shutting-up shop this year.
Throwing its doors open for the first time in 2011, the venue has operated more like a free-flowing creative hub, guesting just about everything a bar, Nightclub, Triple J venue, skate park, after party warehouse, comedy lounge, dance studio, but most importantly, a live local music haven.
Current owners have stated that the performance space will not continue as a live music venue writing the following on the Facebook event, “The time has come for us to sell the bar, the new owners will be renovating it and turning it into something completely different. So this is your last chance to have a drink at The Causeway.”

The Causeway played an important role in Perth’s music scene, in 2014 the space hosted the likes of NZ’s BROODS, as well as many interstate acts including KLP, Velociraptor, New Navy and Fishing not to mention their homegrown legends like One Thousand Years and Amberdown.
It’s a major burn for Perth’s live music fans and the small-to-medium artist scene as a whole, which is continuing to suffer as more and more venues are closing, leaving less space for artists from both near and afar to perform.
As sad as this news is, The Causeway, true to form, are throwing one final bash which will be held on Friday 27th February (tomorrow!) and as the team so eloquently state, “We can’t burn the place down as we are handing the keys over, but let’s get weird and drink the place literally dry.”
