Now that the world is finally settling after this year’s Eurovision competition, it’s time to have a look at how Australia fared in the final results.
Sure, we all know that Guy Sebastian did pretty damn well, making it all the way to #5 in the Grand Final for his performance of the infectious tune ‘Tonight Again’, but did you know that there was another Aussie that achieved even greater success than Sebastian?
Does the name Katrina Noorbergen ring any bells for any of y’all? It should, Noorbergen is an Australian songwriter from Sydney-based band Cassette Kids. It turns out that Noorbergen, who is now based in Berlin, co-wrote the song ‘A Million Voices’, which was performed by Russia’s Polina Gagarina, the entrant that came second in the overall competition.
Not only that, Noorbergen actually starred alongside the Russian singer onstage at the show in Vienna. She spoke with The Confidential of the exciting experience. “For me the greatest significance of the last few days is that I was able to be part of something that brings so many different people together from all over the world and to experience this while doing what I love,” she said.
“I know I wasn’t just representing Russia that night but also Australia and I really felt the love and support from everyone at home as well,” she added.
Although many raised their brows when Australia was included in this year’s European singing competition, it’s worked wonders for both Sebastian and Noorbergen, with both artists’ songs soaring on iTunes charts across the globe, undoubtedly providing them with a nice little pay packet for their creations.
Who would have ever thought that Australia would have such a strong presence in a competition like Eurovision?
