South African performance artists turned actual musical group Die Antwoord have never been shy about calling out their entertainment industry peers, whether it’s Kanye West or Lady Gaga, and those in Hollywood aren’t spared either.
Taking to Instagram, Yolandi Visser, one half of the rap-rave duo, called out the makers of Suicide Squad, the latest cinematic dispatch from DC Comics, claiming the film and its characters heavily crib from Die Antwoord’s playbook.
Visser shared a video which juxtaposes various scenes and promotional images from Suicide Squad with images of Die Antwoord, set to the sounds of ‘Jockin My Style’ by rapper Craig Mack.
In particular, the video suggests the look of Jared Leto’s Joker rips off the look of Die Antwoord’s Ninja. In her missive, Visser claims this isn’t simply a coincidence as Suicide Squad director David Ayer had contacted the group.
“Yes David Ayer u jockin our style,” Visser writes. “Callin ninja up before your movie came our pretendin 2b down, so it looks OK when u bite our black & white graf style & our opening sequence to umshiniwam & an all da lil tiny details u nibbeld dat other people wont see but we notice.”
Visser claims she and Ninja were informed by Leto and Cara Delevingne, who also stars in the film, about “how much [Ayer was] talkin abt us on set but u never asked our permision to rip us off. An when ninja texted u sayin wassup wif dat u said nothin like a scared lil bitch”.
Visser also claims that Ayer invited the pair to the premiere of the film, which Visser declined to attend. “But ninja went, tinkin ur solid guy an mayb there was jus a lil ‘misunderstanding’,” Visser continues.
“Den poor ninja had to sit thru dat hole bullshit movie. An u even got da nerve to say wassup to him smilin – an ninja has to b nice cus he is there wif his kid. But we all tink u wack.” Check out the full post below.
