Kristy Lee Peters, better known to the music-loving masses as KLP, is back with a brand new single and EP, both entitled Ember. The EP came out last week and we managed to steal some time front he very busy Peters, who took us through the release track by track.
The EP has been a long time in the making and features collaborations with the likes of Julian Hamilton (The Presets), Andy Mak (Vera Blue), Thom Mack (Vera Blue), Nate Donmoyer (Passion Pit), Mereki (A-Trak, Sky Ferreira, Goldroom), Cassian (RUFUS, Hayden James), and more.
Meanwhile, the single was co-written and co-produced with homegrown powerhouse M-Phazes (Meg Mac, Illy, Thelma Plum) and Jason Gilbert. “I’ve been a friend and massive fan of M-phazes after we met at a song writing camp in Bali a few years back,” said Peters.
“This year we both attended the camp again and were paired up together to write along with Jason Gilbert. The two of them went back and forth on the beat, adding drums and layers to the loop while I worked on lyrics, and then Phazes took a line I sang ‘You’ve got it all’ and then flipped it.”
Peters went through the rest of the EP just for Tone Deaf readers and you can check it out below.
EMBER
Have you ever been in a situation, or been watching someone in a situation and you sit there and think… this could be way simpler. If only this happened or if only this person knew this, or if I could just change this one thing! There’s only so much you can give out before you need the other person to start giving something back and meet you half way. ‘Ember’ stems from this idea of burning yourself out when you constantly give give give.
BACK IN THE ROOM
Every single word I write in my music has to come from a very real place. I can’t bullshit and I can’t make stuff up. I often find myself trying to get in some highly emotional states to find things to write about, be it really happy or feeling low as fuck – if I’m comfortably numb then I struggle to find things to say. For anyone (or especially a partner) witnessing me put myself through this rollercoaster process in order to make music, it’s a little crazy to watch. ‘Back In The Room’ is written from that persons perspective, watching me digging deep to lose my mind and create, all the while knowing that once it’s done I’ll come back and be present and stable.
MINDSET (TOOK A LITTLE WHILE)
When I walked into the room and first met Andy and Thom Mak, they asked me… “so what’s going on in your life, tell us all your problems”. I think it was a bit of a joke but it’s also a pretty standard question when starting a writing session. I had had a great morning and so without thinking too much I replied something like… “nothing. I’m happy in all my unhappiness. Took a while but I’m cool right now.” And there you go; the song kind of wrote itself from there on.
FLIGHT
I have a friend who was going through a really shitty time and I was really trying to check in as much as possible and encourage her to let go of the past and try new shit out. I would be a complete idiot and text funny things, sayings, quotes, photos etc. Whatever I could do to break her out of the dark place she was in. This song started as a message to her to become more fearless, and then along the way it picked up some meaning from a few other friendships I have with people I would fight for and try anything to make them feel good.
ALREADY THERE
A year or so ago I had a few close friends of mine leave Australia and move overseas. While they were running around internationally, I was running through the process of letting them go and trying to be cool with the idea of having to make new friends and meet new people. It made me think about how everything always changes, we are always looking for the next thing, the thing that we think we ‘need’ to make us complete. When I stop and think, I know that we are actually all already there in that happy place if we choose to be. Our surroundings, our friends, our possessions, and our jobs – none of that shit actually truly makes us deeply happy. I’m no master at it yet, but I try every day to realise that I am ‘Already There’ if I want to be…
RECOVER {FT. REMI}
A few years ago, close friends did some really mean shit to me in the name of ‘business’ and one of them said something to me along the lines of ‘you’ll never make it without me’. Well I totally made it out of that situation and I was stronger and happier on the other side. I stayed angry for a long time, then hurt, and finally got the stage where I didn’t care and I could wish them well. I decided to take it as a gift that they had given to me – ammunition to be better and do well! I explained the idea to Remi when he was writing his verse and he too had had some similar things happen and saw it as a thing that only gives you more drive. It can only make you stronger.
