The estate of Chuck Berry has released ‘Wonderful Woman’, an upbeat ode to Berry’s wife of 68 years, Themetta, or Toddy, as she is known.
His son, Charles Berry Jr., explained to the New Yorker that finishing his final album, Chuck, was a driving force in Berry’s life for over three decades, after master tapes were destroyed in a fire in 1989. All the music on Chuck was recorded between 1991 and 2014 – when Berry retired from the road.
Unfortunately Berry died in March, at age 90, narrowly missing the (still) planned June release of the album.
“The release came and we were very close”, Berry Jr. explains, “but he said, ‘I’m ready to go.’ He didn’t hear it on the radio or see the downloads on iTunes, but I can guarantee he’s looking down from heaven and saying, ‘Good God, I think the world will love it.’”
