Cut Copy have released the first taste of their forthcoming album, the ethereal, jangling, funky ‘Airborne’.
The song was premiered on triple j this morning, and isn’t dissimilar from the psychedelic pop of 2011’s Zonoscope, with sharp stylistic shifts which mirror that album’s excellent ‘Where I’m Going’.
The song was produced by Animal Collective’s Ben Allen, whose touches can also be heard in the song’s off-kilter structure.
Cut Copy have been working on the album for a number of years, although they briefly broke from work to release the odd and interesting January Tape early in 2016: a 44-minute instrumental piece, released on limited-edition cassette tape. Needless to say most CC fans didn’t get a chance to listen to this, so this marks the first — let’s say, commercially-viable — music from the group since 2013’s ‘Free Your Mind’.
The band are also playing two showcase gigs this month, one in Melbourne at the Croxton on the 20th (which has sold out, sorry!) and a Sydney show at the Metro on the 19th, which you can still get tickets for.
