When it comes to music, most artists have a theme that features prominently in their work. For some, it can be a topic of heartache or happiness, while others may even strongly incorporate themes of humour, social consciousness, or education. Needless to say, almost every artist has a different approach to songwriting.

With American folk musician Trevor Hall hitting up Aussie shores next year as part of the Bluesfest festival, we’ve decided to take a look back at some of the artists who incorporate elements of spirituality at the heart of their music.

From Hall’s laidback, breezy tunes, to the soulful sounds of Erykah Badu, plenty of acts give listeners a spiritual journey thanks to their music. Add in the likes of a Sufjan Stevens, Xavier Rudd, and more, and you begin to realise just how common a theme spirituality is in music.

Check out our video on musical spirituality below, and read on for details of Trevor Hall’s Aussie tour.
