Prince’s music is set to head back to the big screen, with a new musical based around his work set to enter production.

Back in 1984, Prince made musical history when he starred in Purple Rain. A film that was produced with the intent of showcasing Prince’s acting and musical abilities, the accompanying soundtrack went on to become of the rocker’s most successful releases, and is often considered one of the best albums of all time.

Now, 34 years later, it seems that lightning may strike twice, with a new musical based on Prince’s work set to hit the big screen.

As Variety reports, Universal Pictures have acquired the rights to an array of Prince’s songs, and plan to create an original film based around his music.

Unlike recent films such as Bohemian Rhapsody, those in the know have made it perfectly clear that this is not a biopic, and will instead see Prince’s music help advance the plotline.

Of course, if you’re wondering whether this is a project that has the blessing of Prince’s estate, you’ll be pleased to know that this film won’t be nixed in the near future, with the Prince estate actively pursuing the idea of turning his work into a film.

At this stage, details are fairly scarce in regards to what the project will look and sound like, though it has been confirmed it will be executive produced by Troy Carter, the entertainment advisor of Prince’s estate, and Universal Music Publishing Group Chairman and CEO Jody Gerson

While rumours of a Prince biopic were floating around the Internet a few months back, this won’t be the only project about the Purple One in the works, with a Netflix documentary entering production as well.
