Going to be in Seattle next April? If you fancy a pilgrimage to the home of grunge, the world’s biggest ever Nirvana exhibition will be opening at the city’s Experience Music Project. It promises to bring together the largest collection of Nirvana ‘artefacts’ and ephemera, and has been endorsed by the band’s surviving members.
In a statement, bassist Krist Novoselic said that the exhibition entitled Nirvana: Taking Punk To The Masses would celebrate the work of Kurt Cobain who “was a visionary artist who touched people all over the world, It’s great that there will soon be a collection that celebrates that contribution to music and culture. There’s a story with Nirvana at its center, but it’s a story that also includes the many people, bands and institutions that make up a music community. The show is a celebration of Northwest music.”
Not only will the exhibition feature rare and unseen photos of the band, it also features items such as the first guitar Kurt ever smashed on stage, the yellow cardigan he wore from 1991-4, the winged angel prop featured on Nirvana’s “In Utera” tour, Cobain’s handwritten lyrics for Nirvana songs, including “Spank Thru” and “Floyd the Barber;” and a Teac reel-to-reel tape machine owned by Cobains Aunty on which a young Kurt demoed material for his nascent bands, Organized Confusion and Fecal Matter.
