In one of the strangest crossovers in recent memory, the famous Ned Flanders-themed metal band just appeared on the show it drew inspiration from; The Simpsons.
For a few years now, the Arizona-based Okilly Dokilly have been doing the rounds, delivering metalcore tunes that are derived from the actions and quotes of The Simpsons character Ned Flanders.
Although the band are rather divisive in online communities, their general existence is one of a well-thought out parody than anything.
Rather than taking themselves seriously, the group describes their musical style as “heavy Nedal”, they adopt stage names that rhyme with their collective surname of “Ned”, and they all perform dressed as Ned Flanders.
While the vast majority of the band’s lineup changed last year, Okilly Dokilly have just put out their second record, and unlike many other themed metal bands, they’re actually pretty damn good.
However, it seems that their presence has not gone unnoticed by the producers of The Simpsons, with the band appearing in the closing credits of a recent episode.
Check out Okilly Dokilly performing ‘White Wine Spritzer’ on The Simpsons:
Appearing at the end of Sunday night’s ‘I’m Just A Girl Who Can’t Say D’oh’, Okilly Dokilly appeared with the music video of their track ‘White Wine Spritzer’, which takes its lyrics from a two-second quote that appeared in a 1999 episode.
Speaking to Rolling Stone about the group’s appearance, showrunner Al Jean explained that The Simpsons‘ producers realised they had to get the band on the show at some point.
“We saw the video and knew they had to be on the show,” Jean explained. “We do not endorse their message of indiscriminate drinking of white wine spritzers.”
“I’m very much in disbelief,” explained Okilly Dokilly frontman Head Ned. “It’s like this is just a strange alternate universe and I’m gonna wake up the next day and it’s just like, ‘No, you didn’t start the Ned Flanders band, you still work in accounting,’”
“And I’ll be like, ‘Well alright, at least my imagination knows how to have a good time.’”
This isn’t the first time that a band has appeared in The Simpsons‘ closing credits, but it does make us wonder where it will end. Maybe Briggs could use his relationship with Matt Groening to score a spot? Or maybe Melbourne’s Dr. Colossus could get the recognition that they deserve?
