Defunct prog-rock act The Mars Volta are gearing up for a full-fledged reunion, it seems, with frontman Cedric Bixler-Zavala confirming the news to a fan recently.

Back in 2013, prolific musicians Cedric Bixler-Zavala and Omar Rodríguez-López of The Mars Volta decided to call it quits after more than a decade together. Having initially come together as part of At The Drive-In, the pair soon formed a new band, Antemasque, touring the world in the process.

However, early 2018 saw Bixler-Zavala reveal that The Mars Volta would indeed be making a comeback at some point in the future, though he couldn’t say when.

Fans soon became a little bit excited earlier this year when US Presidential hopeful Beto O’Rourke (who is also a former bandmate of The Mars Volta’s Cedric Bixler-Zavala) was asked whether or not the band would play his prospective inauguration ceremony.

“We would be honoured to have The Mars Volta play anything along the campaign or in this presidency,” O’Rourke explained with a laugh.

“Cedric and Omar… That group is one of the most talented collections of individuals, and I’m really proud that they’re from El Paso.”

However, as Consequence Of Sound reports, it seems we won’t be waiting until early 2021 for a reunion, with Bixler-Zavala noting a reunion is in the works.

Taking to Twitter yesterday, Cedric Bixler-Zavala responded to a fan who expressed his desire at a new chapter from The Mars Volta. While the group’s frontman didn’t give too much info, he did confirm that “it’s happening,” indicating some movement from the group soon.

As CoS points out, this isn’t the first time that the rocker has hinted at a return from the band, but the first time he has indicated that the wheels are indeed in motion.

Just last week, Bixler-Zavala explained to a fan that the band were “in the kitchen finding new ways to through [sic] curve balls”, while he revealed earlier this month that he had been in the studio with The Mars Volta’s Omar Rodríguez-López, who he had referred to as the “Puerto Rican Bernie Sanders.”

While At The Drive-In announced another hiatus last year, and with Antemasque not up to too much, it’s indeed sounding as though The Mars Volta might just be the comeback of 2019 that we’ve been hoping for.

At this stage though, information is rather light, so we might need to wait a while before we find out more about the group’s long-awaited reunion.
