Are you an aspiring muso hoping to make a name for yourself in the Australian music scene? Then you might want to grab some valuable insight from community radio music directors if you’re heading up to BIGSOUND this year.

Ask anyone, and they’ll agree that there’s no greater musical thrill than discovering a local artist that appeals to your senses. Before they made their way to your ears though, there’s a pretty good chance that this artist managed to get their start thanks to the power of community radio.

Reaching nearly six million listeners every week, Australians adore tuning into community radio to hear the up-and-coming artists who will soon be stars of the scene.

With more than 450 stations around the country, community radio has long been a crucial platform for Aussie artists to get their music heard, making up 37% of all music heard across the network of stations.

Ever listened to music from Courtney Barnett, Hermitude, Briggs, The Presets, Dan Sultan, or Emily Wurramara? Yep, their success is a testament to the power of community radio and what it can do for your career.

Have you ever wondered how these tunes make it to the airwaves though? Well, we have Amrap (the Australian Music Radio Airplay Project) to thank for that. With their AirIt music portal, they help to ensure that Aussie releases are made available for community broadcasters, helping to kickstart careers in the process.

Now, Amrap are set to provide young Australian musicians with the info they need to get their music on the airwaves thanks to the BIGSOUND 2019 Listening Sessions.

Offering an opportunity for showcasing artists and delegates to meet with Music Directors from some of Australia’s tastemaker community stations and get valuable feedback on their music, representatives from Melbourne’s 3RRR, SYN Radio and PBS FM, Brisbane’s 4ZZZ, Hobart’s Edge Radio, and Sydney’s 2SER will be on hand at Cloudland in Brisbane next month.

With valuable insights from the people who know community radio inside and out, along with what it takes to truly make a splash on the Australian music scene, this is the sort of opportunity that most musicians could only ever dream of.

Heads up though, places to the BIGSOUND 2019 Listening Sessions are limited. So if you’re a showcasing artist with an artist wristband, or a BIGSOUND delegate, be sure to apply now to ensure you’re in with a chance to have your music heard and to receive the guidance you need.
