Mile Nile doesn’t want to conform. She doesn’t want to behave. In fact, she wants to be mislead from the straight and narrow. She wants to go astray. And she wants you to join her, with the brand new video for her song ‘Mislead Me’, which comes out today.
Mila Nile is a Swede who calls Sydney her home. This icy alternative pop innovator glides over boisterous beats with a cool and collected vibe that can only be compared to icons of the genre, MØ and Tove Styrke. Spinning these influences together with a dash of Lorde, a sprinkle of E^st and a few drops of Broods, Mila creates a sound that is completely her own, and sparkles with all the shine that well-crafted pop tunes should.
Mila’s songs are raw, honest and an emotional outlet for her internal insecurities. Speaking on ‘Mislead Me’ she says: “I started writing it in a park near my home in Newtown. My friends were all at work, I was feeling kind of lonely and I decided to really dig deep into that feeling. I’ve always struggled interacting with new people, and have quite a bit of social anxiety, so the words came out straight away – how hard it can be to connect with people and how easy it can be to depend on vices like alcohol to get you through those situations.”
“Rather than feeling depressing, I wanted to create the feeling of letting go of that anxiety and succumbing to a crazy night out. A lot of elements in the song represent that same feeling – the weird, distorted hook in the instrumental breaks, the surging pianos in the chorus, the choir of claps in the bridge, all those parts are inspired by the different versions of myself that I become on nights out with new people.”

Mila Nile has created her own perfect little pocket in the music landscape, and ‘Mislead Me’ proves that beautifully. The song jitters and jolts around Nile’s frosty vocals, drawing you into a world of debauchery and destructive behaviour. We’ve all lost direction before in our lives, and Nile isn’t afraid to put those experiences into words. She’s raw, vulnerable and open on this brand new track, while still providing a tune that is danceable and infectiously catchy. It’s a talent that not many can master, yet Nile pulls it off without a single ounce of hesitation.
We sat down with Mile Nile to get to know her better upon the advent of her new video, talking on her inspirations, the meanings behind her tracks, and buckets of chilli aioli.
Get To Know: Mila Nile
How did your artist name come about?
Mila Nile is a moniker made from combining the first and last letters of my first and second name. Can you guess my birth names? Mila’s kind of my alter ego. Someone confident enough to stand on a stage and sing to a room full of strangers about things I’d struggle admitting to myself.
How would you describe your music to your grandma?
“Alternativ pop du kan dansa till”
My grandma’s Swedish, but it translates to “Alternative pop you can boogie to.”
Tell us about a few of your tracks; their titles and what they’re about?
My latest single ‘Mislead Me’ is about owning up to your insecurities, embracing late-night energy and allowing yourself to let go and live in the night. It’s reflecting on anxiety and the vices that you can find yourself relying on to get through social events.
My first release ‘Young Hearts’ is a love letter through the eyes of my 21-year-old self. Reminiscing on a special time I had when I lived in Melbourne.
What do you love about your hometown?
Today my hometown is Newtown and what’s not to love about Newtown? It’s got great people, awesome bars and good vibes.
Career highlight so far?
Collaborating with producer Dave Hammer. It’s been such a great experience inviting Dave to work on my tracks. He’s a very talented human and an absolute legend.
Fave non-music hobby?
Photography! I do all of my own imagery and I shot the music video for ‘Mislead Me’.
What’s on your dream rider?
A case of Balter XPAs, some version of potato and a bucket of chilli aioli.
Dream music collaboration?
There are so many people I would like to collaborate with! If I can only say one it would probably be Mø. Her music has amazed me since I first saw her perform at a music festival in Sweden 5 years ago.
Where do you see yourself in 10 years?
Hopefully on stage singing my heart out.
