The music world mourned at the news that beloved lo-fi pioneer Daniel Johnston had passed away, age 58. Johnston’s bittersweet, pure in heart recordings inspired swathes of musicians, from Kurt Cobain to Beck. Since his passing, mamy artists have paid tribute to the musician through memorials, tributes and covers.

On Friday night, Nick Cave kicked off the North American leg of his ‘Conversations With’ tour in Washington D.C. During the performance, Cave took a moment to pay tribute to Johnston with an acapella cover of his 1990 song, ‘Devil Town.’ You can watch fan-filmed footage of the performance below.

The ‘Conversations With’ tour has seen Nick Cave incorporate Q&A sessions with fans and solo piano performances.

‘Devil Town’ recently made its way into a live set from The National. “That was for Daniel Johnston, who left us,” frontman Matt Berninger told the audience. “And we’re still here.”

Earlier this week, Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds revealed that their new record, Ghosteen, is set to arrive on October 3rd. News of the album’s arrival was confirmed through Cave’s Red Hand Files newsletter.

Cave revealed that Ghosteen is a double album. Part 1 is comprised of eight songs, whilst part 2 consists of two long songs and a spoken-word piece.

“The songs on the first album are the children. The songs on the second album are their parents. Ghosteen is a migrating spirit,” Cave explains.
