Today’s the day, music lovers; it’s time for triple j’s Hottest 100 for 2019.
As is tradition, we’ve already learnt a few facts about the countdown in advance, with triple j revealing that this year is set to be the biggest on record. Of course, we’re pretty eager to see who is going to come out on top of this year’s poll.
While we’ve spent a while looking back at the songs that never made the countdowns over the years, and the tracks that Warm Tunas reckon might top the poll, today is the day we find out for sure.
Will we see Denzel Curry become the first-ever winner with a cover song? Will Tones And I cap off a massive year with a huge win? Or could Billie Eilish’s ‘bad guy’ pull a fast one and top the lot?
Well, now is the time to find out! So stick with us today as we give you a live update of the songs that are being played throughout the day, along with a few facts that we learn as the countdown continues.

Final Facts
The 2019 countdown saw a record-breaking 3,211,596 votes counted this year, an 11% increase from 2018’s record-setting effort.
The poll featured 100 songs from 7 countries, including 65 from Australia, 23 from the USA, five from England, three from New Zealand, two from Italy, and one each from Canada and Wales. Italy’s two entries equal their record set back in 2009 when The Bloody Beetroots released their debut record.
This year’s countdown also saw triple j’s Like A Version segment put into the spotlight, with much said about whether or not Denzel Curry’s cover of ‘Bulls On Parade’ should be eligible to top the countdown, given its popularity and frequent predictions to top the poll.
In the end, the cover reached the #5 position – one spot above Tones And I’s ‘Dance Monkey’ (the other front-runner) – and matched the record of highest-placing cover version, while becoming the highest-placed Like A Version cover to date.
Three other Like A Version covers charts, including Skegss’ cover of the Pixies’ ‘Here Comes Your Man’, Alex Lahey’s rendition of My Chemical Romance’s ‘Welcome To The Black Parade’, and Lime Cordiale’s cover of ‘I Touch Myself’ by the Divinyls.
Interestingly, Lana Del Rey’s cover of Sublime’s ‘Doin’ Time’ became the first non-Like A Version cover song to make it into the countdown since Meg Mac’s version of Bill Wither’s ‘Grandma’s Hands’ in 2014. The year prior, The Amity Affliction also featured with a rare cover to have not been recorded in the triple j studios, fittingly appearing with their version of ‘Born To Die’, originally by Lana Del Rey.
Billie Eilish’s chart-topping effort with ‘bad guy’ managed to set another pair of records in the process, with Eilish becoming not only the first solo female artist to top the countdown, but also the youngest-ever Hottest 100 winner. Eilish is also first female voice to feature at #1 since Kai’s appearance with Flume as part of ‘Never Be Like You’ in 2016.
With Thelma Plum’s ‘Better In Blak’ reaching #9, she managed to set the record for highest position reached by an Indigenous artist, nabbing the record from A.B. Original who featured at #16 with ‘January 26’ in 2016.
This countdown also saw Juice WRLD appear with ‘Robbery’ at #42, just 48 days after his untimely death. This makes Juice WRLD the first feature artist to appear posthumously in a countdown since Mac Miller the previous year, and the second since Charles Haddon of Ou Est Le Swimming Pool? in 2010.
Another massive record was also set this year, with Slipknot pushing the longest time between chart placings to 19 years. First charting back in 2000 with ‘Wait And Bleed’, the group have since broken The Avalanches’ 15-year record.
Frequently, this previous record has been attributed to Paul Kelly, with 16 years between 2000’s ‘Every Fucking City’ and his appearance on A.B. Original’s cover of ‘Dumb Things’. However, this only appears to his status as a featured artist, with his appearance on Little Birdy’s ‘Brother’ in 2009 often overlooked.
Billie Eilish and G Flip managed to become the best-performing artists of the countdown, with five appearances each. While G Flip had four of her tracks make it in, a fifth appearance came as part of her work on Alex Lahey’s cover of Welcome To The Black Parade’.
Meanwhile, Lime Cordiale appeared four times, BENEE, Denzel Curry, Flume, Ruel, Tame Impala, Thelma Plum, and Tones And I all appeared three times, with Baker Boy, Dean Lewis, Goodboys, Halsey, Holy Holy, Mallrat, Meduza, Ocean Alley, Post Malone, and Skegss all featuring twice.
57 of the charting songs were from male artists or all-male groups; 29 were from female artists or all-female groups, while 14 songs involved both male and female artists.
Also, if you’re interested in some of the more specific facts, the shortest track was Kanye West’s ‘Follow God’ at 1:44, while the longest was Alex Lahey’s ‘Welcome To The Black Parade’ cover at 5:22.
