To get us through the weird times we’re currently living through, iconic rocker Dave Grohl has shared his own Pandemic Playlist with a song for each stage of quarantine.
Writing for The Atlantic, the former Nirvana drummer, current Foo Fighters frontman, and all-around God of rock’n’roll Dave Grohl shared his very fitting pandemic playlist to the world to fit “your every quarantine mood.”
From setting the mood for us Aussie listeners by recalling his time spend in Australia cuddling koalas and being entranced by “a mangy wombat, running at top speed, carving a figure-eight track into the dirt of its small pen,” he begins by saying, “Hi, I’m Dave Grohl. Welcome to quarantine!”
“In order to get through this difficult period (and I truly believe that we will get through this, in time), it is important to recognise the many stages of isolation and anxiety, and to pair them with appropriate musical accompaniment. Here are a few suggestions that you might find helpful.”
And, of course, he’s helpfully popped the playlist onto Spotify for us all to jam out to.
Consisting of 10 songs, the playlist has a few absolute killer bands featured such as The Cars, LCD Soundsystem, and The Smashing Pumpkins.
Taking us through song by song, Grohl notes that each tune was picked to represent a different stage of emotions we’ve surely felt during our time in quarantine: preparation, nesting, productivity, virtual connection, online learning, intimacy, claustrophobia, panic, insanity, and hope.

From the first song chosen to represent preparation, ‘Let’s Go’ by The Cars, Grohl states why he chose such a song, writing that “you’ve stockpiled enough pasta to feed an entire Olive Garden for a month, you’ve cataloged your toilet-paper rolls down to the individual sheet” as well as “you’ve upgraded to liquor bottles with handles on them.”
Following through the other stages of quarantine, Grohl comically describes each stage such as nesting being where you “release your inner Marie Kondo” to ‘Our House’ by Mädness, as well as stage 8’s ‘panic’ being where you start “to believe in UFOs from clocking too many hours on YouTube.”
Wrapping it up, Grohl ends his playlist with one final quarantine stage – hope – with The Beatles’ fitting song ‘Here Comes The Sun’ stating, “I hope that someday soon we can all step outside and share some music together. Sing along to ‘Here Comes the Sun’ by the Beatles, and I know you’ll feel a little better.”
