Quarantine is bringing together some amazing online action when it comes to music. This week has seen Wheatus fans come together to cover ‘Teenage Dirtbag’.
This era of social distancing we’re living in has served as a creative outlet for so many. We’ve seen the brilliance of The Offspring covering a ‘Tiger King’ song and Fatboy Slim’s daughter try out her DJ-ing skills as Fat Girl Slim. Now the newest form of entertainment comes to us as a cover of the 2000s hit ‘Teenage Dirtbag’ by Wheatus performed by a mass amount of fans.
Occurring as a result of the Quaranteenage Dirtbag Challenge, the alt rock outfit asked fans to submit a video of themselves either playing or singing along to their hit song, welcoming harmonies, instrumentation, and beatboxing.
“You don’t have to play the parts exactly as they are on the original. Especially if you play an instrument that isn’t in a traditional rock band. Got a hankering for a tasty bass lick? Go for it? You play a trumpet and you wanna bust a trumpet solo? Do it! Not much of a singer but you’re a star beatboxer? Go on then!,” the band posted to Facebook.
After the band had their 20th-anniversary plans thwarted by COVID-19, the band decided to do something fun, inspiring their Quaranteenage Dirtbag Challenge, and in total they received “submissions from 106 contributors, across 16 countries”, with flute playing, singing, a child tuning in with a cello, and some crafty work by some players creating tunes with kitchen appliances and accessories.
Although some of the songs timing is a little off throughout the video, it’s so wholesome seeing so many people, from so many different walks of life coming together to say that they’re “just a teenage dirtbag, baby“.
