Indie pop singer-songwriter Amy Shark has responded to her viral TikTok video that many deemed as being ‘racist’.

Amy Shark has issued an apology following a controversial TikTok video of herself going viral. “I am sorry if I offended anyone,” she begins. “I can see that the TikTok I posted a couple of weeks ago was silly and inappropriate and honestly I never meant to cause any upset.”

The video in question, sees Shark mocking Asian stereotypes with the soundtrack of a common TikTok dub-over.

In a since-deleted tweet, comedian Nina Oyama took to twitter to offer a comment regarding a TikTok video posted by Amy Shark, stating: “Don’t forget to check on ur white friends in isolation to make sure they aren’t doing stupid bullshit like this.”

Soon after the video went viral, Oyama followed up with another tweet noting that people should only be responding to Shark in order to educate her, rather than blast her.

“Don’t cancel Amy Shark, just get her to delete it and maybe explain to her why it’s bad,” she explained. “The sound is a popular TikTok dub, which ripped off a racist stand up routine from 10 years ago.”

Although Oyama wrote that people should only address Shark about the video in the name of education, it hasn’t stopped her followers from shouting their opinions with one writing, “Mmmm very racist,” while another expressed “fucking yiiiiikessss.”

Amy Shark’s apology seems to be gaining ground with followers, however, with one fan writing, “I trust you meant well, live and learn,” and another saying ” I really can’t imagine that you would have posted something to intentionally hurt anyone though.”
