You should, under no circumstances, condemn your mum to a shitty, last minute, David Jones-core present this Mother’s Day. Mums are the greatest and they deserve more than a token Body Shop Green Tea Essentials box set to celebrate their existence.

So to save you from the crippling shame of handing your mum a gift that you KNOW is awful, we’ve put together a little gift guide for all the music-loving mummas out there.

Crowbar x The Wilds Mother’s Day Bundle

Crowbar have just announced a collaboration with The Wilds floristry on the gnarliest bouquet and wine deal we’ve ever seen. If your mum has a penchant for punk, you simply can not go past the Danzig’s Mother gift set, a bottle of silky shiraz and a bouquet of native flowers is a recipe for child of the year.

If your mum’s taste leans more towards the power pop persuasion, Crowbar have you covered with their Stacy’s Mom pack, which features a silly fizzy number, Lordette Meth Traditionelle.

Order by Thursday 5 pm for Saturday. Local Sydney pick up only.

Bandcamp Gift Card

Gift Cards as presents are a point of contention for many. Some argue that they’re lazy, but I think that giving someone the freedom to choose exactly what they want is one of the most thoughtful things you can do. Amid the coronavirus pandemic, live music has come to a complete standstill, leaving many artists without their core source of revenue. A Bandcamp gift card is a great way to put money into the pockets of those who have been left in a state of financial uncertainty. The DIY community also has some of the sickest merchandise ever so your money is going to two good causes 1) artists that need it and 2) your mum looking fresh as hell.

On June 5th and July 3rd, Bandcamp will waive their revenue share on all purchases, so perhaps encourage mother dearest to wait until then to make her purchase. You can buy the gift cards here.

A Mother’s Day Greeting from Kathleen Hanna

You read that right. Give your mum the opportunity to connect with her Riot Grrrl roots with a personalised message from Kathleen Hanna. Of course, this is Kathleen Hanna we’re talking about, so the money is going to good cause — with all proceeds going to nonprofit Peace Sisters.

“Hi! I just joined this platform called Cameo where you can get me to sing ‘Happy Birthday’ or send a message to a friend or do a Mother’s Day thing,” Hanna shared in an announcement  video. “The whole reason I’m doing it is to give money to my favorite nonprofit, Peace Sisters,” she added. “Each time you pay me to make you a little video, a girl will go to school in Togo, West Africa. So I don’t know! I’m going to give this a try.”

DIY Mixtape

A perfect present shouldn’t burn a hole in your pocket. If you’re skint this mother’s day, give your mother the gift of a personal mixtape. Mums may be the only people on the planet that have more love for DIY projects than the Bandcamp community. My own mother, who exudes a stone-cold, emotionless exterior that can be likened to Miss Havisham, has kept every single gift I’ve ever made for her. If you needed inspiration, our incredible writer Tyler gifted our other incredible writer, his wife Brittany, the most perfect collection of mixtapes ever. You can read more about it here — be warned, you’ll probably cry.

Beastie Boys Photo Book

Earlier this year Beastie Boys announced a new photo book with longtime collaborator, filmmaker Spike Jonze. The creative relationship between Beastie Boys and Jonze has spanned decades and the book features over 200 of Spike Jonze’s personal photographs from their time together. MCA is to music-loving mums what George Clooney is to wine mums. You can find the book here.
