The release of Coheed & Cambria’s seventh studio album, The Afterman: Descension, is yet another collection of unique progressive rock tracks, baring all the recognisable characteristics that have been typical of the four-piece for well over a decade now.
Being the second part of a double album (Ascension released late last year) The Afterman: Descension carries on the story being told throughout its predecessor.
Together, the concept albums depict another chapter of science-fiction story The Armory Wars, written by frontman Claudio Sanchez.
Through the eclectic metal-influenced, alternative rock, nine-track listing, the journey of astronomer Sirius Armory is told, as he investigates an almighty energy source but discovers it is not at all glorious, but rather a hellish afterlife for departed souls.
The album immediately launches into its sci-fi theme in opener ‘Pretelethal’, robotic voices, delicate guitar riffs and chimes all making their mark.
As expected the tracks then alternate between heavier grunge-ridden songs and softer, slower numbers, with a few catchy pop-punk tunes thrown in between, typical of most Coheed collections.
Sanchez’s eccentric yet outstanding vocals tell us the story, while musically, The Afterman: Descension incorporates everything a good album should: catchy as hell heavy guitar riffs, drum beats to add suspense or cheer, chirpy uplifting numbers, and the ever alternating tempo Coheed & Cambria love to employ.
